Senior Vice President, US Operations, FedEx Express
Matthew Thornton, III began his career with Federal Express in 1978 as a package handler in the Memphis Hub. Today, he serves as Senior Vice President of the FedEx Express U.S. Operations division. In this position, Thornton oversees more than 53,000 employees serving customers who ship more than 2.8 million packages a day with FedEx Express. The division is comprised of the following organizations:
• Package Pickup and Delivery Operations
• Retail Operations
Thornton’s career includes FedEx Express positions as Senior Vice President, Air, Ground & Freight Services; Vice President, Regional Operations (Central Region), Vice President, National Hub Operations, and Managing Director, District Operations.
His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis and an M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Thornton was recognized in 2005 as one of the “75 Most Powerful African-Americans in Corporate America” by Black Enterprise Magazine, and in 2009 he was named to the magazine’s list of “100 Most Powerful African-Americans in Corporate America”.
He has served as campaign chair of the FedEx Express United Way campaign, and honorary co-chair of March of Dimes 2007. He also served on the 2007 Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) board of directors.
Thornton is the recipient of numerous awards including five FedEx Five Star Awards, the highest annual recognition bestowed upon a FedEx employee; the FedEx Express Best of the Best Award; the Senior Vice President’s Award, and the Divisional Performance Award.
Thornton is married with two children.
