For 8-year-old, Akash, who lives in Mumbai, India, eyesight is probably not something he takes for granted. Akash was born with exotropia, a condition that caused one of his eyes to turn in a different direction. Exotropia not only affected Akash’s vision, but also his ability to learn and his self-esteem. Because Akash lived in extreme poverty, there was no opportunity for his eyesight to be repaired, until it was determined that he qualified for a free surgery through Orbis, a non-profit organization dedicated to treating and preventing blindness—an organization that FedEx supports...

Saving Sight Worldwide: ORBIS International

...Through its education programs, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital does a lot more than just cataract surgeries. As the plane is so well equipped we are able to provide a variety of eye-training to the back and front of the eye and the area around the eye.

For example, not long ago we landed in Mongolia and 90% of the nation's ophthalmologists, and a large group of Ulaanbaatar ophthalmic nurses, joined our program over a three week period of time to update their training The entire Mongolian nation will benefit for years because of this one visit! Mongolia has benefited from our visit and we look forward to more of these programs in the future...

Why I Fly - A FedEx pilot's view on Saving Sight Worldwide with ORBIS

I’ve volunteered to use vacation to fly about 50 ORBIS flights all over Asia, Africa and the Middle East. For me, nothing can replace the experience of witnessing an operation and seeing a child get the gift of sight. I just wish that all of our FedEx family could witness these things for themselves. It gives you a whole new perspective on ‘seeing the world!’...

On Sunday 20 June I took part in the first ever Plane Pull in Ireland, sponsored by FedEx Express. The aim of Pull for Sight was to raise money for ORBIS, an international charity that aims to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries.
