Reach Out and PLANT…Somebody’s TREE for EarthSmart

...Our conservation projects will include a half or full day of service for FedEx team members, working with each NFWF grantee and the local community. We will help plant trees and shrubbery in Pittsburgh, Miami, Memphis and Washington, D.C.; clear invasive plant species in Seattle and Chicago; restore trails in Colorado Springs; revitalize riverfronts and watersheds near Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Dallas, Newark and Boston; and transplant native plants to the Los Angeles area coastline and to San Francisco’s Presidio Bluffs.

Last year, FedEx team members helped plant 15,510 trees, which will be responsible for reducing 372,240 pounds of CO2 per year. In addition, we have helped restore 219 acres of habitat and reduce runoff water volume by 570,000 gallons per year. All of which translates to a fresher and more beautiful environment for us and the next generation to enjoy...

I Know Why FedEx Cares in Los Angeles

For 7 years, it has been my privilege to lead the annual FedEx Cares Los Angeles program. Over the years that I’ve coordinated this project, I’ve learned a lot about the needs in my own community and about the company I work for. The type of project that we do and the location of the project varies from year to year, but the outpouring of support from our Southern California team members never wavers. And although I see it time and again, I’m always amazed at how willingly our team members step up to volunteer and give back to those in need.

William is from the Bronx, and doesn’t seem daunted at all by the prospect of at least 12 years worth of higher education in his pursuit of a career as a surgeon. And Ryan loves photography, and plans to become a photojournalist....

Purple Goes Green Coast To Coast

...I expected to learn that the environmental needs and attitudes were vastly different for these two opposite corners of the country. However, I found that both areas actually have quite similar environmental needs…improve air and water quality, monitor local waste disposal, clean up polluted properties and promote recycling. I also found that the FedEx volunteers in both locations were quick to roll up their sleeves and get to work. This was not a surprise to me though. I’ve yet to encounter a group of FedEx team members that fail to rise to the challenge of pitching in when there is a good cause and work to be done...

On Saturday June 12th, I completed the experience of a lifetime. I participated in Aids/LifeCycle 9, a week - long, more than 500 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles organized to raise awareness and funds to help put an end to HIV/AIDs.
