Using Maps for More than Just Shipping

ngo-aid-map.png Walking around Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the months after the 2010 earthquake, I was confronted with a major challenge. How could InterAction, as the largest coalition of over 180 U.S. humanitarian and international development non-profits, actually help coordinate the massive engagement of our member NGOs?

With support from FedEx, we have been able to do just that while creating a platform to highlight our members’ work and engage with interested U.S. businesses. Later that busy year, InterAction mapped our members’ projects in Haiti, providing an unprecedented view of exactly who was doing what, and where. Haiti Aid Map, which continues to be updated, became the first site of NGO Aid Map, an InterAction initiative to help raise awareness on US non-profits work around the world.

5 Tips to Help Save Fuel and Promote Eco-Driving

EV-master_jm12337-cropped.jpg In Japan, the recent earthquake resulted in a short-term fuel shortage that hit us hard – literally fuel was not available at gas stations. Eco-Driving was an operational imperative, as it became even more important while we secured alternative sources of fuel.

Along with the other safety briefs about earthquake aftershocks, recovery efforts, and the nuclear crisis, FedEx Express added re-enforcement in our communications with couriers regarding Eco-Driving. Since they already knew the 5 tips well, they came through in a big way and were able to stretch the fuel we had.

For Japan, Eco-Driving was not just about a contribution to the environment – it was a necessity. How the couriers used the 5 tips when it counted helped us to be there for our customers who were depending on us more than ever for critical shipments.

In May 2008, I went to Chengdu to help coordinate FedEx relief efforts after the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan province. The earthquake, which hit on May 12 at 2:28pm, registered 8.0 on the richter scale and demolished homes and livelihoods. In its wake, tens of thousands of people were left dead and those who survived were homeless.
