Let's Be Social at Work

No, I’m not talking about hosting an ice cream or pizza get together in the breakroom. Even though an ice cream sundae with strawberries, chocolate and whip cream does sound good. Excuse me, I digress. Nor am I talking about a dance in the company’s cafeteria. “Social at work” is about providing employees with social media tools to enhance collaboration (particularly across silos and geographies), decision-making, transparency, participation in initiatives and innovation.

As an avid runner, I enjoy warm summer days when I can lace up my shoes and go for a jog through my neighborhood. I also enjoy the longer hours of sunshine, and watching the neighborhood kids taking advantage of the extra daylight with games of dodge ball, football, or street hockey. But it also scares me a little because I know there are many times that kids go chasing after a ball and forget to look for oncoming traffic.

The annual “World’s Most Admired Companies” report released today listed FedEx as the #6 ranked company, up two positions from our rank in 2011.

NBC Show Highlights the Stories That Make FedEx Great

I recently had the pleasure of helping to host NBC’s Brian Williams at the FedEx World Hub in Memphis.  Brian was in town to film a profile of FedEx and our founder Fred Smith for his new show, Rock Center with Brian Williams which aired Wednesday night.  We gave him the full FedEx Express immersion that night including a jump seat ride in one of our newest B777’s from Newark to Memphis with Captain Paul Cassel, an opportunity to stand on the tarmac while some of our 145 planes landing that night taxied in the distance, a look into the package sorting at the Matrix and the SPSS (w
