New Paths, New Opportunities for Small and Medium Businesses

131122_Berlin SME Breakfast Andy Gosheron.jpg I have been with FedEx now for 29 years. One of the bonuses of my job is that I meet new and interesting people all the time.

I spend a lot of time on the road and at events. But it is not every day or every week that get asked to hold speech in such a stunning and remarkable location as the rooftop café of the German parliament in Berlin. On this occasion, I was asked to hold a speech at a FedEx sponsored breakfast event aimed at people who want to set up their own small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).

Making childbirth safer for Tanzania’s women

You might remember the 2012 blog post about how FedEx supported a maternity ward at a hospital in Tanzania. I am the coordinator of this project on behalf of the German medical charity action medeor, one of Europe’s largest such organizations.

This summer I had the opportunity to visit the ward and see for myself with my own eyes the great progress that has been made so far. I am now delighted to report back to you...

“Social Heroes” from Germany – How students won global acclaim for groundbreaking CSR work

social-heroes-combined.jpg The idea arose in 2004 after a party we had thrown. And unlike so many other ideas that are born after a party (or during it), this one actually became reality. It all started when one of us raised the question of why we actually return empty bottles to the supermarket. To get a refund for the deposit (in Germany the deposit system is quite big) or just to get rid of some unwanted waste? For us, the answer was the latter and that’s how the idea of donating deposit slips was born.

We took immediate action, designed a box and tested the idea in Berlin where customers could donate their deposit slips in local supermarkets. The test worked well and it soon became our first project with multiple partners. In Berlin, the charity “Berliner Tafel” alone uses 100 of our boxes for its fundraising and raises €100,000 a year that way.

The Making of…. a Truly Global Movie

filmbox_fedex_blog.jpg
It was a hot summer’s day in August 2011 when an unusual email popped up in my inbox. “We are a group of film students from Hamburg, Germany and we would like to ask for your support in making a truly global movie,” a young man by the name of Adrian wrote. “Interesting,” I thought, “what exactly does he have in mind when he says a truly global movie?” A few emails and several phone calls later, I had all the information I needed.

Munich Likes You

I´m sure most of you have already heard of the “Oktoberfest” that takes place in Munich each year. In October 2012 however, there was another reason to celebrate as FedEx started operating a B777F out of Munich airport. Since the beginning of October, the state-of-the-art aircraft has been flying four times a week from Munich to Memphis via Milan, Italy. With this flight, FedEx offers the fastest connectivity from Munich to the U.S. – including next-day delivery to 99% of the U.S. for shipments originating in the Munich region.
