A Pilot Kit for the 21st Century

paperlesscockpit1.png ...Just like you’ve probably abandoned your old heavy phone books because you can look up information digitally now, FedEx is doing the same thing. In addition to on-aircraft computer access to digital information, we’ve finished distributing over 4,300 iPads to all our pilots so they can access all necessary information onscreen, and now we’re in the process of taking all the paper kits off all the airplanes in our fleet. It’s a lot of paper--- 32 TONS worth!...

How Coast Pet Distributors got creative to reduce costs and carbon

jaredwilliams-sq.png Learn more about how small business owner, Hayden Epstein and Warehouse Operations Manager, Jared Williams use recycling to make the return trip worth it.

Coast Pet Distributors is a small, family business that specializes in providing the highest quality pet foods and products to retailers in seven states.

Late in 2012 we started shipping a new food line that had to be kept at refrigerated temperatures. We researched the most effective way to deliver product to our customers and insulated shipping boxes seemed to be a great fit. But each insulated box and gel pack cost us about $52.00 – a lot of money for packaging that was thrown away after one trip. So why not ask customers to hang on to the boxes and find a way to get them shipped back to us?

Remote reps moving towards the 'Paperless Office'

When we think about sustainability and our customer service remote rep program, the first thing that comes to mind is how we have reduced carbon emissions by elimination the daily commute. We have another way in which our program is EarthSmart (solutions for a more sustainable world), and that is the reduction of our use of paper and striving toward becoming a ‘paperless office.’

Biomimicry, Nature’s Innovator

104566684.jpg One of the many reasons I am proud to be on the FedEx team is our outstanding leadership. Our founder and CEO, Frederick W. Smith states, “At FedEx, we recognize that our impact is greater than the services we provide. We are committed to being a great place to work, a thoughtful steward of the environment and a caring citizen in the communities where we live and work. We are passionate about sustainably connecting people and places and improving the quality of life around the world.” Mr. Smith encourages us to ask the age-old question “What if…?” and the world is a better place as a result.

EarthSmart Innovations

At FedEx, our focus is simple when it comes to sustainability: to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways. Execution is always a bit trickier. That’s why we have the three pillars of our EarthSmart program that focus upon our services and assets, our team members and the workplace, and the community: EarthSmart Innovations EarthSmart @ Work EarthSmart Outreach I have written about both EarthSmart @ Work and EarthSmart Outreach in recent posts. Now, it’s time to spend a little time on the third.
