SXSW Interactive 2014: So you’ve got a billion followers…now what?

sxswinteractive-sq2.jpg By now, most of us have adopted social media as an integral part of our daily lives. I, for one, knew that the world had changed the day that my grandmother sent me a text about my recent Facebook status update, from halfway around the world. Now, that is a connected planet! We may not be a member of everything, but we have our Facebook friends, our Twitter and Instagram followers, our LinkedIn connections, and so on… So now what?

One of the prevailing messages at SXSW Interactive this year centered around taking this hyper connected world that we’ve created – and doing something good.

Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, asked in one session, “What is the true promise of our connected society? It should be people helping each other.”

Transformation: A Prescription for Growth

Gene's media briefing in BJ.jpg.jpeg When I arrived at FedEx 14 years ago, the term “smartphone” was never used. Social media was virtually unknown, and you often had to wait until a developer handed you an envelope of prints to know what your vacation photos looked like.

It’s amazing how times have changed. Throughout history we have witnessed mind-blowing transformations that have dramatically improved our lives. Excuse me, I digress. Nor am I talking about a dance in the company’s cafeteria. “Social at work” is about providing employees with social media tools to enhance collaboration (particularly across silos and geographies), decision-making, transparency, participation in initiatives and innovation.

What we learned from giving away a million dollars

CARD ART_FedEx -low.jpg Whoever thought giving away $1 million dollars would be easy? I thought it would be easy, along with a team of committed FedEx colleagues who also have the purple blood of FedEx.

In a social media savvy world, it’s been no secret that FedEx teamed up with American Express on their second annual Small Business Saturday program including a commitment to give away 30,000, $25 gift cards on our Facebook page. (The remaining 10,000 cards were given directly to some of our customers to distribute.)
