Hiring our Heroes

...Our company employs numerous veterans including FedEx founder and chairman, Frederick W. Smith, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Each year we participate in several events to support our troops. Since 2005, we’ve helped transport Christmas trees to our military as part of the Trees for Troops program. ...Sixty seven years ago, Army Private First Class John Alfred D’Amore served in US armed forces in Belgium during WWII. During that time, he was in love with a woman, Rose Archie, who later became his wife. Fitting with his lastname D’Amore literally meaning “of love”, the young soldier carefully and secretly carried a keepsake box of photos and love letters from his fiancée Rose. As the ravages of war ensued, the keepsake box was lost but the soldier safely returned home to marry his sweetheart and build a family.

It was only this past June that the small wooden box was rediscovered by a woman cleaning an attic in the Ardennes region of Belgium and the adventure of finding its rightful owner began.

FedEx Military Dad Delivers Trees For Troops

DSC_0218.JPG I was honored when FedEx asked me and my wife to be part of the Trees for Troops team that would deliver Christmas trees to Fort Polk. How could we refuse seeing my son and his buddies? It was an honor to give back to our military by being a FedEx Freight team member who delivered Christmas trees to one of the 60+ U.S. bases through the Trees for Troops program.

During our busiest time of the year, we’re not too busy  to show our appreciation to the military men and women who serve our country. As part of Trees for Troops, over 17,000 live trees donated by tree growers around the country through the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation are being delivered. Destinations include more than 60 military bases throughout  the U.S. and installations in Kuwait, Spain, and Bahrain.   Jason Case, a Senior Security Specialist in Columbus, Ohio is one of many FedEx employees who make this program possible by helping at distribution sites.

PIMA 077.JPG Is this FedEx’s newest fleet? No, but it is an opportunity for an old Marine to walk down memory lane. Who would have thought that 20 years after leaving the Marine Corps, FedEx would give me an opportunity to once again work on the CH-46 Sea Knight?

For the past several months, I have had the honor to not only work for FedEx, but with the Marines again. Our joint mission: to relocate a retired CH-46 helicopter from the boneyard at the Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ to The Veterans’ Museum in Halls, TN.
