Closing the Achievement Gap can Strengthen our STEM Workforce

Today, I had the opportunity to attend the Congressional Black Caucus Science and Technology Brainstrust event hosted by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas).

The brilliant students and panelists gathered at this event inspired and encouraged me, as they addressed the importance of closing the achievement gap for tomorrow’s leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) within the African American community and other diverse communities. Teach For America, the national education non-profit, has played a leading role in this effort as well through its commitment that one day all children will have access to a world-class education.
By building skills in the STEM disciplines, today’s youth are better positioned to become productive members and leaders of the global workforce.
From scientists to doctors, software developers and engineers, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million job openings in STEM-related fields by 2018. It is clear that as we become a more increasingly high-tech society, there is rising demand for smart, talented young individuals from diverse backgrounds to spur our high-tech economy to grow and thrive.
At FedEx, we recognize the importance of STEM education and are committed to developing the next generation of diverse leaders in this space. FedEx was founded almost 40 years ago on a foundation built from science, technology and math, and it is through innovation and technology that we will continue to grow our business and provide our services to millions of people across the globe.
FedEx is excited about the many possibilities a STEM education can provide our youth today. By supporting organizations like the Congressional Black Caucus Science and Technology Braintrust, Teach For America and many other community outreach programs, we are proud to join the effort to help open doors for diverse students to achieve success.
