FedEx Impact Feeds the Need

Food bank.jpg.jpeg

The following is a guest post from Paula Rushing, the Volunteer Coordinator at the Mid-South Food Bank.

Volunteers are vital to Mid-South Food Bank's mission.  With a lean staff focused on accessing and distributing food, we rely on volunteers to do the bulk of the work with making donated food ready for distribution.  The Food Bank could not distribute food efficiently to our 31-county service area without the help of volunteers who sort and repack donated food, stock the shelves at our Agency Mart and fill the boxes with food for the BackPack Program.  Volunteers also help at special events and at the Food Bank office.

FedEx is a long-time supporter of Mid-South Food Bank.  In 2013, FedEx provided 400 volunteer hours to Mid-South Food Bank.  Representing 13 different departments, the work of 176 volunteers enabled the Food Bank to distribute 26,568 meals with an estimated payroll savings of $8,856!

In addition to individual volunteers, FedEx donates employee time and FedEx trucks to pick up food donations during the annual Operation Feed and Kids Kan Food Drives.  These food pickups involve driving to companies and schools around the Memphis area, receiving thousands of pounds of donated food and delivering it to our warehouse.  With our limited fleet, we would be extremely hard pressed to be able to collect this food in a timely manner.  In 2013, 17 couriers, two handlers and four dispatchers provided 200 volunteer hours of scheduling, pickups and deliveries.

A representative from FedEx has served on our Board of Directors for many years, lending valuable insight and expertise.  In addition, FedEx engineers are now serving on our Facilities Committee, assisting in the building selection and planning for Mid-South Food Bank's move to a new location.

At this year's annual Volunteer Recognition, Mid-South Food Bank honored FedEx with an award for the Volunteer Group with the Most Impact

Paula, thanks for sharing this story. It's wonderful that FedEx employees are willing and able to contribute to such a worthy cause in the Memphis area. Bravo Zulu to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen. Candace
