Dress for Success wins big at Memphis event

Dress for Success Worldwide is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women in 110 cities across 12 countries. Each year, the organization helps 55,000 women rebuild their lives and gain economic independence. Dress for Success provides suits to low-income women when they have job interviews.

FedEx supports the organization across both of these key dimensions, providing philanthropic donations, in-kind shipping and hands-on team member engagement.

By leveraging our shipping network across the U.S., FedEx has helped Dress for Success not only collect clothing, shoes and other items, but we’ve also delivered educational materials such as Steps for Success books to international affiliate locations. Our Special Delivery trucks and team members help collect donations at special events across the country, including at the Congressional Suit Challenge in Washington, D.C.

In conjunction with the FedEx 40th Anniversary month of service, dozens of Memphis-based FedEx team members recently participated in a one-day Dress for Success Suit Challenge.  Collection sites were set up at the World Headquarters and at the World Tech Center.  To add an element of fun, it was promoted as a friendly competition between teams sponsored by two FedEx executives: “Team Laurie” and "Team Dottie".  Both Laurie Tucker and Dottie Berry were very happy to serve as honorary team captains.

Because the local Memphis Dress for Success office was holding an “Upscale Garage Sale” a few days after our collection drive with items ranging from clothing to toys to furniture and more, the FedEx teams were able to accept business clothing for men as well as women.

The total number of donated items was 711, enough to fill two trucks. (Team Laurie won, with 454 items collected; Team Dottie had 257 items).

“Dress for Success WINS!!!” said Laurie Tucker after the event. “I am just thrilled with the turn out, and what a fantastic haul!“

The local Dress for Success office was very appreciative of the FedEx effort.  “FedEx is always such a wonderful supporter of our efforts.  This is just another example of your tremendous commitment to helping improve our communities. We thank you for all that you do!”
