Pack, Ship & Give Back this Holiday Season

As much as Superstorm Sandy took away from millions of people, uprooting lives and devastating neighborhoods, it has also inspired, in the worst of times, the best in people – a determination to give. The courage to face rebuilding shattered communities, even in the immediate wake of the hurricane, inspired all of us who watched from afar. We ached at the misfortune of fellow Americans. Even from thousands of miles away, we couldn’t help but see them as neighbors.

At FedEx, we tried to act on that from the first hours of the catastrophe. As Sandy made landfall in the Northeast on October 29th, we made sure non-profits we’ve worked with for years knew we would assist them to transport critical relief supplies. As the extent of the hurricane’s destructiveness became clear, these relationships quickly kicked into high gear. In the weeks following the storm, we helped move more than three million pounds of materials – water, blankets, hygiene kits, medicines – for organizations including the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Direct Relief International, Heart to Heart International and United Way. So far, FedEx has donated $1.5 million of in-kind and monetary donations to help victims of this terrible storm.

Another relationship has been particularly close to our hearts - with our customers. So many have reached out to us asking how they could help those in need through FedEx. That helped ignite another, critical stage in the relief effort – extending our support for Superstorm Sandy victims through a nationwide Pack, Ship & Give program.

From November 26 to December 2, FedEx Office will donate $1 to food banks in New York and New Jersey for each Pack & Ship transaction that comes through our doors, up to $50,000. Each dollar will provide five warm meals through the Food Bank For New York City or $10 worth of groceries through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey

As CEO of FedEx Office, I have been touched, and in some cases overcome, by the stories of team members helping each other through this difficult time. More than 1,000 FedEx Office team members live and work in New York and New Jersey. We deeply admire their selflessness throughout this crisis. Their stories of putting other’s’ needs before their own, getting out in the community to do whatever they can to assist those in need of a helping hand, say so much about our company. It is a special place for one reason above all others - because of the people who work there.

I heard of store managers who personally delivered gas, generators, water and blankets to team members who lost power and heat for days after the storm. One FedEx Office district manager delivered groceries and no-cooking-required recipe ideas to a team member without refrigeration or a way to cook. Another, who serves his community as a volunteer fireman in his off- hours, worked tirelessly to help keep his neighbors safe in the difficult days following the storm.

Stories like these, and there are many more, make me proud to be a part of FedEx Office. It is compassion and community that drives us to continue to do as much as we can to give back to those in need.

This season of giving started early this year when Superstorm Sandy left so many in need and donations poured in from around the world. But for those who remain displaced or without basic comforts, the urgency remains. With Pack, Ship & Give, FedEx Office is continuing the commitment to help the victims of the storm. Because in the end, no matter where we live, we all need one another. We are all neighbors.
