FedEx moves big things…and the Chilean miners' rescue Fenix Capsule is BIG!

Capsule being lowered into the Nelson Crate.jpg

How do you move an 800-pound, 14-foot long capsule around the world? Very carefully, that’s how. That was the challenge that FedEx was presented when it was selected as the Official Carrier of the Fénix capsule used to rescue miners trapped in the San Jose mine in Chile last year as it toured from the U.S. to Canada and Germany.

FedEx transports big things all the time, so we knew from the start it that we could do it. But we were carrying an item (if you can call something that big an item) that is a source of national pride for Chile - and we wanted to give it the best ride possible.

Enter the FedEx Packaging Lab!

Our team was tasked with designing a customized shipping crate to transport the Fénix capsule. For this unique shipment, we worked closely with a local crating company in Memphis, Tennessee, to build the crate to our exact specifications, and shipped it empty to Washington, D.C. where the capsule was loaded – and it fit like a glove.

Since then, the capsule has travelled to Toronto and Ottawa, Canada; Bochum, Germany, and it’s now back in Washington, D.C. prepared for an exhibition titled “Against All Odds” that starts today at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.

If you’re in Washington, D.C., in the next few months, stop by the Smithsonian and see for yourself why FedEx is proud to have been selected as the Official Carrier for the Fénix capsule on its North American and European tour.
