Here's to the Tinkerers - FedEx and FIRST Robotics

GR9A4623_ag3.jpg Do you know a tinkerer? There are a few definitions of this term and some are not so positive. My definition of a tinkerer is a future innovator – someone who is passionate, creative and committed to solving problems and helping others.

When inventor Dean Kamen was a kid, he tinkered with things in his garage. He would spend hours taking things apart, putting them back together, taking them part again and reconfiguring them. Over the years, this intensive tinkering led Dean to explore and invent devices such as the first drug infusion pump, a robotic arm for disabled veterans and an all-terrain electric wheelchair known as the iBot.

Engineered for the Future: FedEx and FIRST Robotics

IMG_1578-square.jpg In 1989, Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway and the portable insulin pump, wanted to find a way to share his enthusiasm and inspire young people to be science and technology leaders.

Kamen’s passion for science and education led to the creation of FIRST Robotics. More than just a robot building competition, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) engages students in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: Brought to you by… robots!

Fedex_robot_00074-edited-sm.jpg This year’s traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City will have a new twist, as teams of high school students and their robots from around the country are opening the parade.

The students are representing FIRST Robotics Competition, which was founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire interest and participation in science and technology. FedEx has been a proud supporter of FIRST for 13 years, and we’ve donated shipment of the robots to New York for the parade.

We caught up with some of the teams and asked these brilliant students a few questions. Here’s what the students had to say...
