Safe Kids Vietnam: Helping Students Walk Safely To School

Traffic simulation corner painting.jpg.jpeg
A second grade student on her way back home from Binh Quoi Tay Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was walking along the edge of the road – the small and uneven sidewalk was occupied by vendors and motorbike parking – when a large truck quickly approached from behind. Turning the corner, more trucks blocked her way. She wormed through a tiny gap between an idling motorcycle and a utility pole then ran home as quickly as she could.

This scene was recorded in front of the gate of Binh Quoi Tay Primary School at the end of a school day on November 28, 2013 by a well-known online newspaper in Vietnam, Dan tri Online. Sadly, this scenario is the norm for many students throughout Vietnam who must walk to school on dangerous and crowded roads. Here at AIP Foundation/Safe Kids Vietnam, we’ve teamed up with FedEx to change this.

A Commitment that Makes a Difference

Untitled3.png Every year, I look forward to Walk This Way Month, an annual campaign dedicated to providing road safety education to kids in schools. This is the time of the year when we (FedEx and Safe Kids) truly work as a team to fulfill our mission of keeping kids safe while walking.

This time of year is so special for me because we make such a difference in the lives of children and families. I still think about one second grade girl from Beijing named Joy Li, who we met last year during Walk this Way Month. Joy Li walked to school every morning across four major roads. She told us how she learned a lot of bad habits from adults. She didn’t cross the streets at the crosswalks and she ignored the light signal when she was in a hurry.

After our Walk This Way Month activities, Joy Li changed many of these habits...

Keeping your Children Safe Online – Have you had the ‘Digital Talk’?

From your children’s perspective, the internet is an essential part of their lives. It is the link between them and the rest of the world. But the internet contains risks.

As we all spend more and more time online every year. How do you keep your children safe on the internet?...

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: Brought to you by… robots!

Fedex_robot_00074-edited-sm.jpg This year’s traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City will have a new twist, as teams of high school students and their robots from around the country are opening the parade.

The students are representing FIRST Robotics Competition, which was founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire interest and participation in science and technology. FedEx has been a proud supporter of FIRST for 13 years, and we’ve donated shipment of the robots to New York for the parade.

We caught up with some of the teams and asked these brilliant students a few questions. Here’s what the students had to say...

Lighten Up This Halloween

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, twice as many children are hit and killed walking on Halloween than any other day of the year. It’s also a problem that’s easy to fix, which is why Safe Kids and FedEx are teaming up this Halloween. This year, we want every child to be wearing something reflective or bright so they will be seen by drivers on Halloween. There are lots of ways to make it happen. Kids can carry a flashlight or glow stick, wear light-colored costumes or attach reflective wristbands or tape to their outfit.
