FedEx Cares Week: Creating Ripple Effects

  One of my proudest accomplishments is my work with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, an organization that provides free home repairs and maintenance to elderly homeowners so they can remain in their homes. Since joining the board of directors in 2010, I have been truly moved by the people I have met and the number of FedEx coworkers who are always willing to help out.

FedEx Cares: Building Bridges with Books

Grand Entrance (50) (1024x768).jpg.jpeg When Principal Bob Moseley walks the halls at Jolly Elementary School, he sees more than bustling students and projects on display; he sees rich opportunity.

His students are making great strides as evidenced by Jolly’s students increasing their reading levels by an impressive nine percent this past school year. Through a program established to track and reward student reading, students collectively read more than 6,000 books and 10 million words.

FedEx Heroes Help Rebuild New Jersey

jerryalvare-fcw2-sq.jpg When I think of the word “Hero” it reminds of leadership, bravery, and selflessness. It reminds me of doing what’s right with no reward and recognition expected. It reminds me of the FedEx Community who banded together as one against the devastation that Hurricane Sandy left New Jersey in on October 22, 2012. The storms 80mph winds and 100mph gusts damaged 346,000 homes, caused 37 deaths, and over $30 billion in damages.

It’s hard to believe it will be a year since the storm. Can you imagine losing your entire home and having to start over again? I know I can’t. I was lucky to only lose power for a few days, but that wasn’t the case for many people affected by the storm...

I didn’t understand why I should if I already gave to local agencies in my community. But that year, I participated in the United Way “Loaned Executive” program, a FedEx effort that provides professional talent and leadership to help the United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. During orientation week, I visited more than a dozen nonprofits in the Mid-South that receive support from United Way.
