Although you may still be polishing off Halloween candy, walk into almost any retail store and the holidays will hit you in the face—ornaments, gift suggestions, bold advertisements reminding you to shop early for the lowest prices. Retailers will likely pull out all the stops this year, especially since shoppers have 32 days to purchase and send gifts—the maximum—between Black Friday and Christmas.

I recently spoke on a panel about how the internet and e-commerce are transforming global business. My message was that you could make the argument that e-commerce could be considered the 3rd major evolution in the global economy since the industrial revolution. The first was the dramatic improvements in telecoms and transportation, which virtually eliminated time and distance as trade barriers.

The growing popularity of tablets and other electronics has not only improved information access for consumers (technology savvy or not!) but also widened selection, and made online shopping both natural and logical. These recent developments have strengthened the acceptance of the new online shopping trend we call “e-tailing,” as well as online advertising among investors, and the changed the way the supply chain works.
