FedEx Cares: Building Bridges with Books

Grand Entrance (50) (1024x768).jpg.jpeg When Principal Bob Moseley walks the halls at Jolly Elementary School, he sees more than bustling students and projects on display; he sees rich opportunity.

His students are making great strides as evidenced by Jolly’s students increasing their reading levels by an impressive nine percent this past school year. Through a program established to track and reward student reading, students collectively read more than 6,000 books and 10 million words.

March 19th was a very special day for 450 students at Beacon Heights Elementary School in Riverdale, Maryland when they entered their school's newly redesigned library - new bright colored paint, artwork, furniture, and 250 additional new bilingual English-Spanish books were in the library! FedEx worked with Heart of America to revitalize the school's library to make it an even more engaging environment for children to learn and foster a love of reading.

Back-to-School Season Could Signal Holiday Retail Strength

While summer break may be too short for many students, the end of summer is a welcome change for retailers eager to learn whether students “hitting the books” will result in more parents hitting the store aisles. In line with a general slowdown that occurs during the restful summer months, economic activity also feels a “summer pause,” a “quiet” that can be as loud and jarring as fingers on a chalkboard for many retailers. Fortunately for them, the early back-to-school predictions could mean good marks in their future sales logs.

FedEx to the rescue for Santa

During a book reading at Thurgood Marshall School, Washington, D.C., team members were asked if FedEx can help Santa. “What if a reindeer gets sick?” “What if Santa’s sleigh breaks down?” “Can Santa use FedEx trucks?” In every classroom, unknowingly the volunteers all said the same thing that FedEx will do whatever it takes and for them not to worry. Smile. Wink.

This is the second year volunteers have taken the time to read two books to each classroom, grades pre K – 4th. Each student was also given two books to take home. It was a lot of fun for all, especially since we have a bunch of “hams” in DC. Many were very animated while reading making a lot of the kids laugh. The students were also happy to know there is a backup plan for Santa.
