Many folks don't know that FedEx ships zoo animals and livestock as part of our normal business. The staff that run our FedEx Animal Desk work the logistics on a daily basis. It seems like Lydia Petropoulus and Carolyn Frisch know more about how to do this right than anyone in the business. On the charitable shipping side, I work with them on rescue type situations when we feel it is appropriate.

Judy McMillan, from FedEx in Denver, wrote to our department to see if we could help in moving donated Purina pet foods for Freedom Services Dogs. It is within the city of Denver and the shelter did not have the capability of picking up the food, so FedEx came to the rescue. Here is Judy's thank you:

The husband and wife driving team of Ron and Margaret-Mary Shellito are at the wheel of a FedEx Custom Critical truck for the sea turtles rescue effort. They have more than 26 years of experience driving FedEx Custom Critical trucks, with a focus on transporting temperature-controlled shipments. On August 4, 2009, Louisville, Ky., posted new records for the city, but not ones anyone was striving to achieve. On that day, the city and surrounding areas were drenched with record-setting rain fall, flooding homes, cars and public buildings.Without an ark to rescue them, more than 500 dogs, cats and other animals at Metro Animal Services, were evacuated to drier grounds of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition. Sadly, 11 animals died when the facility was flooded.
