The Memphis World HUB

It's 1:45 a.m. and on a Saturday morning and I am at the center of FedEx's World HUB. For those of you not familiar with the terminology, the World HUB is FedEx's original package sort facility in MEM which sorts over 1.4 mm packages a night. Tonight there are about 12,000 employees here who will take care of our customers shipments while most of our customers are sleeping.

I was fortunate to start here as a hourly employee 28 years ago and through hard work and our great promotion from within philosophy I am now the Vice President of this facility. This is home for me.

I have worked in many different areas for FedEx but there is no place like the HUB. In upcoming posts, I'll share with you what it is like to be a part of this great team as well as what it is like to be in an operation that is so well engineered and executed that every night is like the two minute drill in football. The sort is almost over and soon our planes will be headed to over 140 destinations around the world.

I gotta go.

I worked at the Memphis Hub for Fed Ex from 1988 to 1994 and really enjoyed it! I was a handler on the night sort and went to days to become a heavyweight handler. It was a very rewarding experience and I made lots of new friends. I am sorry I ever left Fed Ex. Great Place to work. Gary from Memphis Tn.

I had a very rewarding career with FedEx and can attest to the hard work and dedication of the employees at the MEMPHIS Hub. Retirement is simply the best. I am sending a shout out to every employee who supported me in any capacity! Thanks,

I have not yet had the chance to visit and observe HUB operations but I am fascinated with all aspects of our company. I have the thirst to learn all I can. These Blogs(just found them a couple weeks ago)are an amazing opportunity for fellow employees to give a glimpes into their daily routine. Looking forward to more blogs. Logan Hakes

I visited the hub last year during my training and I was amazed both at the scale and precision with which the operations were carried out. Just like John mentioned, it would have been a total different scenario when the entire HUB operations started earlier. Given that he had seen the hub transition itself to what is today, I am eager to hear more about the hub as it evolved over time. I am also eager to understand the innovations that were and are part of the hub operations that gave the "Innovative company" label to FedEx. Looking forward for your posts John.. Best Regards Shyam

I'm hooked. Looking forward to reading more about your operation and experiences!
