Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: Brought to you by… robots!

Fedex_robot_00074-edited-sm.jpg This year’s traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City will have a new twist, as teams of high school students and their robots from around the country are opening the parade.

The students are representing FIRST Robotics Competition, which was founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire interest and participation in science and technology. FedEx has been a proud supporter of FIRST for 13 years, and we’ve donated shipment of the robots to New York for the parade.

We caught up with some of the teams and asked these brilliant students a few questions. Here’s what the students had to say...

FedEx Meteorologists Deliver… Rain or Shine

fx-meteorologists.jpeg
Depending on where you are in the world, the holiday season often delivers its own unwanted gift—rough weather. It’s the kind of weather that doesn’t just cause your car to skid. It shuts down roads, leaves you stranded at airports, disrupts large-scale global business, can cost billions of dollars in damages, and sadly, can even cost lives.

This is when the FedEx meteorology team delivers a crucial service—contingency planning. There were several instances over the last decade when my team has been on top of severe weather, as when significant ice and snow in Memphis threatened the operation. We executed our backup plan, which included rerouting aircraft through our other hubs. Events like this demonstrate how much trust and confidence FedEx has in the meteorology team...

Making childbirth safer for Tanzania’s women

You might remember the 2012 blog post about how FedEx supported a maternity ward at a hospital in Tanzania. I am the coordinator of this project on behalf of the German medical charity action medeor, one of Europe’s largest such organizations.

This summer I had the opportunity to visit the ward and see for myself with my own eyes the great progress that has been made so far. I am now delighted to report back to you...

FedEx Honored to Assist in Typhoon Haiyan Relief Efforts

005.jpg We are honored to work closely with disaster relief organizations (American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Direct Relief, Heart to Heart and Water Missions) to donate transportation of equipment and relief supplies to impacted areas. While many agencies on the ground are still assessing needs, we are pleased to report that our first flights with aid are on the way.

Is e-commerce good for all small businesses?

FedEx Quick Form_v5_7OCT13.jpg.jpeg There’s a saying in business that goes something like: “Not all business is good business.”

And the same is true for e-commerce.

While e-commerce is now the largest driving force in the global economy, it comes with warning signs.

Asia might have the most e-commerce “ready” markets in the world – China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore all rank in the top 10 biggest market opportunities– but scratch the surface and securing a foothold in these markets is not easy.

Size doesn´t matter - but Access does! See how Germanplates proves it.

2013_05_28_FedEx_Germanplate_Christian-Kleinschmidt_8333.jpg Access to global markets empowers small and medium companies in particular to grow their businesses. Access connects people and possibilities around the world. Access helps to create jobs. That all sounds fantastic in theory – but on a cold and rainy day a few months ago I had the pleasure of seeing that theory turned into practice and found myself in the middle of a truly inspirational Access story - Germanplates.

Delivering the Holidays, FedEx Style

DSC_0222.jpg This year marks the ninth annual “Trees for Troops” program delivered by FedEx. Today, FedEx volunteers in Thorntown, Ind., are officially kicking off this year’s initiative as they prepare hundreds of fresh trees destined to military members stationed in the Middle East. For military personnel serving abroad, the trees will provide a living connection to their holiday traditions at home.

Tony Dungy TFA FedEx Team.jpg Earlier this week, I had the privilege of visiting Ford Road Elementary School in Memphis with Tony Dungy, Super Bowl winning, retired NFL Coach. Tony talked to a group of 490 students, pre-k through 5th grade, about the importance of taking pride in their education and building the skills they need for a successful future.

<USABILITY = ON> - Celebrating World Usability Day

WUD Image.jpg Every year professionals around the world get together to talk about user experience and how to promote the values of user-centered design. We do this because we believe life can be improved with services and products that are easier to access and simpler to use.

FedEx Cares: Volunteering across EMEA

2013 Collage.jpg EMEA (Europe, Middle East, subcontinent India and Africa) is a vast and diverse region that spreads overs different continents. But despite cultural differences, the spirit of volunteerism is something that translates across regions. And it’s this universal human trait that brings us together every fall during our FedEx Cares campaign.
