Quality Vs. Quantity: Why Emerging Markets Must Concentrate on Sustainable Growth

EX1151_6.jpg As Brazil prepares to host two premier sporting events, the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016, some predict that the country will invest more than $60 billion USD in public works projects ranging from road expansions to the improvement of telecommunications networks. The infrastructure upgrades are not only necessary to accommodate the enormous amount of visitors these sporting events will bring to Brazil, but also to help solidify that country’s standing as an emerging market for growth.

As economic powerhouses, like the United States, faltered during The Great Recession that hit a few years ago, emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa were cast onto the world stage—spotlighted as the next phase of global economic growth. According to a recent article by McKinsey & Company, emerging market cities will generate more than 45 percent of global GDP growth between 2007 and 2025. The report also notes that the need to prioritize sustainable growth in emerging markets has never been more urgent. By sustainable development, the article refers to economic growth that improves lives without exhausting the environment or other resources.

How Coast Pet Distributors got creative to reduce costs and carbon

jaredwilliams-sq.png Learn more about how small business owner, Hayden Epstein and Warehouse Operations Manager, Jared Williams use recycling to make the return trip worth it.

Coast Pet Distributors is a small, family business that specializes in providing the highest quality pet foods and products to retailers in seven states.

Late in 2012 we started shipping a new food line that had to be kept at refrigerated temperatures. We researched the most effective way to deliver product to our customers and insulated shipping boxes seemed to be a great fit. But each insulated box and gel pack cost us about $52.00 – a lot of money for packaging that was thrown away after one trip. So why not ask customers to hang on to the boxes and find a way to get them shipped back to us?

Direct Relief…When You Need It Most

Sensaware_TornadoRelief_May13 050-sm.jpg ...Nowhere was this relationship more on display than in the aftermath of the tornado that recently devastated Moore, Oklahoma. Direct Relief promptly jumped into action and, as the only nonprofit licensed to distribute prescription medication in Oklahoma and all other U.S. states, knew that they had to transport needed medications and vaccines into the area quickly, safely and securely.

Many of these specific medications are temperature-sensitive and require specialized cold-chain handling in transit. So, in order to ensure that these commodities were secure from both theft and extreme temperatures, Direct Relief used our SenseAware service offering to manage and monitor this precious cargo en route...

From Fuel Supply to FuelSense

fuelsense-blog-fueling5.jpeg You never know where some things will lead. As an Army Captain, I had the fortune to command a supply company that included a fuel supply platoon with the responsibility to refuel the 3rd Armored Division in central Germany.

These refueling operations were very static, dispensing fuel from large bladders which required units to congregate many tracked and wheeled vehicles at fuel depots. This made refueling not only inefficient but placed exposed vehicles at a higher risk of an enemy strike as they congregated.

We thought “there has to be a better way”, and during one of our deployment exercises, some soldiers in my unit invented a process to refuel tanks and vehicles while units were moving - a kind of mobile filling station.

Economic Advancement? Listen to These Businesses

The Palaces of Peter and Catherine the Great were a stunning backdrop to last week’s Business 20 ("B20") meetings in Russia.

Governments around the world are looking for the right mix of policies to spur economic growth. With some countries opting for austerity while others try expansionary fiscal and monetary policies, consensus on the best approach is hard to find.
