The Economy of Health Care: Why Breakthroughs in Medicine Create Growing Demand

ACC_033.jpg How old is the oldest person you know personally? 80? 90? 100?

These numbers are well within reach given today’s life expectancy. Had I asked the same question in 1913 instead of 2013, the answers may have been more like 50 or 55. The average life expectancy continues to rise, and with it, new trends in the global health care industry.

The Great Recession showed us that the health care industry could stand up to the sharp economic downturn. While sales of health care supplies and equipment still faced economic decline—about three percent— the industry fared much better than others included in the S&P 500, many of which saw business decline 20 percent.

A Sampling of the FedEx Global Citizenship Report

We recently published our fifth annual FedEx Global Citizenship Report. If you have looked at it, you know that it is an information-packed report of FedEx actions relating to corporate social responsibility. If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to do so.

One way we hope that we can encourage this is the use of two illustrative stories on the Citizenship Report website. One is on fuel conservation actions, and another concerns gender equality around the world.

How to Write the Winning College Entrance Essay: Tips from the FedEx Design Team

2012 Memphis Challenge Group Photo.jpg.jpeg
The Global Citizenship team has supported the Memphis Challenge program for several years through charitable giving. Team members used their knowledge and skills as writers to assist Memphis-area high school seniors who are a part of this program. Informally known as the “FedEx Design Team,” those team members have conducted an annual workshop since 2007 on “How to Write the Winning College Entrance Essay.”

Saying goodbye to the 727 aircraft

Boeing-FedEx-727-intro.jpg For 35 years, Boeing 727 aircraft were a reliable workhorse for the world’s largest express transportation company. Now, the venerable 727 narrow-body freighter closes an enduring chapter in aviation history as FedEx becomes the last major carrier to retire the aircraft from service. The retirement is part of our aircraft modernization strategy.

FedEx team member Al Hill was selected to jumpseat on the final revenue flight of a FedEx 727, on a route from Indianapolis to Memphis, and he shared some of his thoughts with us:

...People have often asked me about my "dream aircraft", and I always say it is the 727, because of its stature. Because of it, we accomplished so much. It really put Federal Express out there. I have some emotions that I didn’t think I would see the day when we wouldn’t fly them anymore...

Atlanta FedEx Volunteers Help Create a Greener Future

10200930047151341.jpg To celebrate FedEx’s 40th Anniversary in Atlanta, FedEx volunteers joined Trees Atlanta to help with tree maintenance in Freedom Park near downtown Atlanta, which is one of the most heavily used green spaces in Atlanta due to the miles of biking and walking trails that weave throughout the park. Trees Atlanta plants thousands of trees each year and maintains them for a minimum of two years in order to give them a better chance to survive long term in the tough urban environment.

Remote reps moving towards the 'Paperless Office'

When we think about sustainability and our customer service remote rep program, the first thing that comes to mind is how we have reduced carbon emissions by elimination the daily commute. We have another way in which our program is EarthSmart (solutions for a more sustainable world), and that is the reduction of our use of paper and striving toward becoming a ‘paperless office.’

Voices from The Scooper Bowl: Fighting cancer by eating ice cream

Ice cream. Kids love it. Adults love it. And it brings FedEx team members together to help raise money for The Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

FedEx has presented The Jimmy Fund "Scooper Bowl" for the past six years, with hundreds of team members volunteering to scoop ice cream to a hungry crowd of children and adults. The three-day, all-you-can-eat ice cream fundraiser holds a special place in many of our volunteers' hearts. Read why these people, all with a special connection to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, choose to volunteer their time and effort at this special event.

Dress for Success wins big at Memphis event

man and woman, DFS event.jpg.jpeg In conjunction with the FedEx 40th Anniversary month of service, dozens of Memphis-based FedEx team members recently participated in a one-day Dress for Success Suit Challenge. Collection sites were set up at the World Headquarters and at the World Tech Center. To add an element of fun, it was promoted as a friendly competition between teams sponsored by two FedEx executives: “Team Laurie” and "Team Dottie". Both Laurie Tucker and Dottie Berry were very happy to serve as honorary team captains.

From Google Blog: FedEx.com re-imagined with Google Maps Engine

google-guest-blog.png The following was first published as a guest blog for Google, written by FedEx IT Manager Pat Doyle:

Google Blog Editor's note: Today we announced the availability of the Google Maps Engine API, letting organizations build their own applications on Google’s cloud infrastructure. Hear from guest blogger, Pat Doyle, to find out how FedEx helps its customers locate their nearly 50,000 retail touchpoints on FedEx.com, using Maps Engine.

Delivering packages to almost any location in the world is just another day on the job at FedEx. On average, we ship more than nine million packages daily and guarantee they’ll arrive on-time, at the right place and unharmed. However, our commitment to a superior customer experience extends far beyond delivering packages. To make it even easier for people to find the information they need online, we launched a new store locator site using Google Maps.
