In the next few days, Americans will exercise one of the sacred rights that makes the United States a great democracy—they’ll head to the polls to vote for president in the general election. Two days after the close of the U.S. election, China’s highest ruling body, the Standing Committee of the Politburo will also be formed. The contrast between the two processes is as dramatic as any drama can depict in terms of the level of participation and transparency.

In the misty mornings in the remote mountains in northern Vietnam, a young boy walks past his village through a field to an isolated building built by FedEx. He does not drop off a package. Instead, he drops into a classroom with other students to learn about the world around him.

Civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King and entertainer Danny Thomas had a lot in common, according to Thomas’ daughter, actress and activist Marlo Thomas. “They both had big dreams. Dr. King dreamed of freedom and equality, and my father dreamed of saving children from catastrophic diseases.”

Do you remember the first office you ever worked in? Mine was a very old building in downtown Memphis. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, turning everyone a sickly green. I recently had the honor of introducing our founder and CEO, Frederick W. Smith, at the FedEx HealthCare Solutions Summit in New York City. In that introduction, I talked about the innovative spirit that has powered FedEx from its inception, and how the passionate curiosity of this business icon permeates the entire culture of the company. In the beginning he asked that age-old question “What if…?”, and the world is a better place as a result.

I had the pleasure to participate in the Mike And Rob LIVE FedEx webcast for FedEx Services recently. They were kind enough to have me on to talk about our sustainability efforts within FedEx. Equally gratifying was the fact that we did the live webcast from the FedEx Enterprise Data Center-West (EDC-W) facility. This is a LEED Gold-certified facility. LEED is the U.S. Green Building Council’s certification of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

While New Year’s signals fresh resolutions for the majority of us, for kids (and their parents), fall and the beginning of a new school year is the time to commit to starting off the year right. Diligence in studying or completing homework is a common goal, but also other activities such as learning a new musical instrument or playing a team sport become greater priorities.
